We imagine that with more wealth we can buy all the things we desire and live a high quality and happy life.

The reality is that less than 1% of the world’s population are millionaires and the vast majority find it difficult to rise above their current income level.

Most people wish they could win the lottery and become millionaires overnight. The chances of winning big, however, are extremely low. As that is the case, you can start your financial success journey by developing a millionaire mindset.

What is the Millionaire Mindset?

Voted as ‘Britain’s Best Therapist’ by Men’s Health magazine, Marisa Peer reveals that the secret to financial abundance is developing a millionaire mindset.

In short, the millionaire mindset is a set of empowering beliefs and behaviors that can unlock your mind’s potential and help you reach financial success.

Over three decades of experience as a hypnotherapist working with CEOs, rock stars, Olympic athletes, and Oscar-winning celebrities, Marisa discovered that all of these successful people have similar powerful beliefs about money. These empowering beliefs are what enable them to effortlessly create a financially abundant life.

The good news is that your mind can be reshaped and reprogrammed to easily adopt these empowering beliefs. In this article, Marisa shares her 7 simple and practical steps you can take today to reprogram your mind and develop a millionaire mindset.

7 Simple Steps To Developing A Millionaire Mindset

1. Examine your relationship with money

Have you ever thought about your relationship with money? Is money good or bad? Is money your friend or foe?

The truth is, our beliefs, empowering as well as disempowering, have a direct influence on the results we get in life.

According to Marisa Peer, our beliefs affect our thoughts, those thoughts influence our actions and those actions create our reality.

This is why it is crucial to examine your relationship with money — to discover what money beliefs might be holding you back.

How to examine your relationship with money?

Begin by asking yourself these questions:

  • Are you afraid that one day you will run out of money?
  • What language do you use when you talk about money? Do you say things such as, “money is the source of evil” or “money does not grow on trees”?
  • What emotions are you experiencing when you think about money? Do you experience anxiety or pleasure?
  • Do you think that rich people are bad?
  • Do you believe that you have to work hard to get money?
  • Do you think more money makes you happier?

As you answer the questions above, take note of how you feel when thinking of your answer. In most cases, answers that incur positive emotions indicate empowering beliefs whereas answers that instigate negative feelings such as anxiety, jealousy, or frustration point to disempowering beliefs.

In order to develop a millionaire mindset, it is important for you to let go of disempowering beliefs and replace them with empowering beliefs that will support your journey towards financial success.

“How?”

You can do that by learning and practicing affirmations which we will be covering next.

2. Boost your self worth

how to be rich

Do you believe that you will feel more confident about yourself if you have more money or fame?

If so, then you might feel that your self-worth is determined by your net worth, status, or fame. In reality, it is your self-worth that determines your net worth and not the other way around.People with a millionaire mindset believe that having high self-esteem and feeling worthy of financial success is what makes them an abundance magnet.

How to increase your self-worth?

Based on the way your mind works, you can teach your mind to believe you are worthy of financial success by practicing and repeating positive affirmations to yourself.

Here are a few examples of positive affirmations you can use:

  • I am worthy of success and abundance
  • I am a money magnet
  • I attract wealth effortlessly
  • Wealth and success is always available to me
  • The more I give, the more I receive
  • The universe is abundant; it has more than enough for me and everyone

In order to integrate these positive affirmations into your life, repeat them to yourself every day when you wake up and before you go to sleep.

3. Commit to achieving financial abundance

Many people find it difficult to stay committed to their goals. They often get swept off by life’s demands such as home errands to run, deadlines to meet, and various other things that pop up throughout the day. By the end of the day, they return home feeling tired and too demotivated to do anything.

The reality is, achieving financial abundance requires a commitment to doing things that bring you closer to financial success. Every action that you take daily will either pave a path closer toward achieving your goals or lead you further away.

The key here is to commit to taking daily actions that can take you in the right direction.

How to commit to financial success?

Start by asking yourself this question, ‘what do I need to do to achieve financial success?’ You might probably think of budgeting, investing, or educating yourself around the topic. Choose one small goal and commit to it until you reach the finish line.

Here is an example. Let’s say your goal is to invest in stocks. Ask yourself, ‘what is the first step I need to take to achieve this goal?’ You might want to sign up for an investment course or join a seminar.

Determine the steps you need to take, schedule them in your calendar, and commit to completing them in the next few months.

4. Practice delayed gratification

abundance mindset

When you are browsing an online store and something catches your eye, do you press the ‘Buy’ button immediately and satisfy that urge inside that says ‘I want it now!’ or do pause and think about it before buying?

Your answer to this question could be an indicator of your financial future.

People with a millionaire mindset usually pause and think before purchasing because they have taught themselves to delay gratification. This requires putting your instant gratification needs aside in order to get a bigger reward later.

Well, what does delayed gratification have to do with financial success?

According to a Stanford research study, delayed gratification is one of the most important characteristics for success in work, finance, and life.

Walter Mischel, the pioneer of this research, offered a child a choice between eating one marshmallow now (a small reward), or waiting 15 minutes and to get two marshmallows (a bigger reward).

When follow-up studies were performed, the children who put off eating the marshmallow instantly for a bigger reward of marshmallows later ended up getting higher SAT scores, were more socially competent, coped with stress better, and were generally better in many areas of life.

This shows that delayed gratification helps you be more successful in life in general, and this includes financial success.

The question is, can delayed gratification be learned?

Absolutely.

How to practice delayed gratification?

Think of delayed gratification as a muscle. Just as how you would go to the gym to train your muscles, it becomes easier to delay gratification the more you practice it.

A simple way to practice delayed gratification when it comes to your spending habits is to give yourself some time when you notice the urge to satisfy your need to purchase something.

Give yourself 24 to 48 hours before you revisit your purchasing decision and you might be surprised to realize that you are not interested in buying that thing anymore.

Remember, delayed gratification is like a muscle. If you stop acting on your impulses and decide to work for a bigger reward later, soon you will not have to use your willpower as delaying gratification will become second nature.

5. Be productive, not busy

People with a millionaire mindset believe that productivity and focus can help them progress faster towards their goals and create the most results. Productivity is the key to financial success because it enables you to use your time and resources wisely and create tangible results in life.

Many people believe that being busy equals being productive, which is not always the case.

A person that claims to be “busy” can be checking emails, chatting with colleagues, going back and forth between many tasks, and never get to complete the most important things that help them achieve their goals.

On the other hand, a productive person prioritizes important tasks, focuses on completing them, and progresses steadily towards their goals.

Here is a short comparison between a productive person and a busy person.

Productive PersonBusy Person
Has clearly defined goalsHas vague goals
Has a short priority listHas a long to-do list
Delegates tasksDoes everything by themselves
Says ‘no’ to things that do not matterSays ‘yes’ to everything
Focuses on a single taskFocuses on multiple tasks at the same time

How to be more productive?

The first step to becoming productive is making a conscious decision to break up with busyness.

Tell yourself that you are done with being busy. From today onwards, you will only be productive.

An effective way to be productive is to pause and ask yourself, ‘Am I being productive or busy?’

If you think you are being busy, look through your to-do list, and determine which are the important tasks that give the most value to you. Put them in your priority list and complete them first.

6. Give more, take less

how to develop a millionaire mindset

Perhaps the most counterintuitive approach in developing a millionaire mindset is understanding the concept that giving more leads to having more.

Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at Wharton University, studies people who are givers and takers. He reports that givers may not create results in the short run but they are surprisingly successful in the long run.

Think about it, when you have a friend who cares about you, you are more likely to develop a deep trust and support each other in your friendship and life. Additionally, social connections givers may open many doors of opportunity to them.

How To Give More And Take Less?

In many cases, we act like takers because of the underlying fear of not having enough to survive. This kind of mentality is called the ‘scarcity mindset’. People with a scarcity mindset believe money is scarce and there are enough resources for everyone.

In order to train yourself to think aligned with a millionaire mindset instead of a scarcity mindset, ask yourself, ‘how can I help?’ or ‘what can I offer to this person?’

Your mind will shift from thinking only about helping yourself and start to think of how to help others as well. Eventually, you will shift to thinking about how to give more rather than take more.

7. Create an abundance mindset journal

An abundance mindset journal is your guidebook that helps you turn ideas into actionable steps. Your journal can include all of the action steps we have discussed in this article but not limited to:

  • Your relationship with money
  • Empowering and disempowering money beliefs
  • Positive self-affirmations
  • Gratitude journaling
  • The action steps you commit to
  • Creating a priority list
  • Thoughts to reminders to yourself to give more and take less

Feel free to add more action steps that support you on the journey towards developing a millionaire mindset and achieving your financial abundance. Ultimately, this journal acts as your guide and cheerleader to help you stay focused and motivated.

The New Rules To Future-Proof Your Career https://marisapeer.com/new-career-rules/ Thu, 02 Apr 2020 08:17:48 +0000 https://marisapeer.com/?p=38307 The rapid rise of technology in recent years has led to many conversations around which jobs will exist in five, ten, or twenty years’ time. With the COVID-19 pandemic throwing the global economy into unprecedented turmoil, in the last few weeks that conversation has stepped up a gear.

How Safe Are Our Jobs?

upset man in front of a laptop

Three million people in America filed for unemployment last week, and more than half of people across the globe feel there is a “high threat” to their job from coronavirus according to an Ipsos survey. The UK lockdown announced on March 24th has been estimated to be in place for six months, with other European countries and the US likely to do the same.

We will come through this pandemic but we know the jobs market will look very different on the other side.

Redundancies and lay-offs have been happening all over the world as businesses tighten their belts. If you have found yourself out of work or with too few hours to pay your bills, it is unsurprising that you would feel anxious about your next step.

Losing your job can knock your confidence but at times like this, it is important to remember that current circumstances are beyond your control and certainly not your fault.

There are, however, many things now you can do to get prepared for the times ahead.

Whether you are looking to brush up on your skills to diversify what you have to offer employers, are considering going it alone and becoming your own boss, or thinking about changing careers completely, there are many things you can do to take charge of your situation.

Take a deep breath and start to think about ways you can future-proof your career.

Here are the new rules for an empowered career.

Rule #1

Old Rule: A steady paycheck is the most important thing

New Rule: You need to find meaning in your work

woman smiling at work

While this current climate is uncertain for most of us, it also offers the perfect opportunity to think about a career change. If you have been putting up with a job you dislike just for the paycheck, now is the time to think about what it is you would really like to do.

While money pays the bills and puts food on the table, it is a sense of fulfillment and purpose that makes us love our jobs.

Think about what a fulfilling career would look like for you. Are you motivated to help people or contribute to a cause you care about? Combine the thing that gives you meaning with your skills. If you are a marketer who is passionate about climate change, maybe look for a job in an environmental non-profit.

Similarly, if you want to help others and are good with people, consider a career in counseling or therapy. Do not be deterred by the thought that it would take years of study. Hypnotherapy, for example, is becoming an increasingly popular and profitable career choice – as is life coaching. You do not need extensive qualifications to be successful in either of these careers. For more information, we have put together guides on how to become a hypnotherapist and a life coach which you may find useful.

It is more straightforward than ever to train in a career that gives you meaning. There are many online training courses which allow you to study from the comfort of your own home – ideal in the current circumstances. You can even conduct consultations online so you can set up your business while social distancing measures are still in place.

If you are not sure what it is you would like to do but know you want to do something more meaningful, sign up for Marisa Peer’s free webinar on how to enjoy a rewarding career transforming lives. Marisa is a globally-acclaimed therapist with more than 30 years’ experience in helping people unlock their full potential and achieve great success. In her 45-minute webinar, she shares the secrets to living an impactful, purpose-driven life.

Rule #2

Old Rule: You should invest time and money into professional accreditations

New Rule: Get professional certifications – for free

girl working and smiling

If you are happy with your chosen career, future-proofing for you could be looking at professional certifications you can get to make yourself even more valuable to employers in your field.

These qualifications do not need to take time and money either – professional social networking site LinkedIn now has short tests you can take relevant to your role that display on your profile for potential employers to see.

Some universities and colleges like Harvard and The Open University offer a selection of free short courses, in subjects ranging from languages to money and business.

Rule #3

Old Rule: Focus on salary when job hunting

New Rule: Career development is more valuable than salary

career development chart

While previously, many people were led by salary when choosing a job, recent events have increased the value of career development opportunities.

If you lost your job following COVID-19 and you do not feel you were shown compassion by your employer, you can take steps to minimize the risk of that happening again.

When it is time to get back to work, think about the culture and values of the companies you are approaching.

Look up the company on review websites like Glassdoor. Reviews from current and previous employees can give you an insight into the company culture and whether it is the right fit for you. Search for some of the current employees on LinkedIn and see if/how they have progressed through the ranks.

Also, look for companies which actively invest in employee development. Do they offer development programs in-house or regularly invest in external training initiatives for their staff? These training opportunities will enable you to develop your expertise while you work and know they are skills your employer values.

Rule #4

Old Rule: The over 50s should not bother learning tech skills

New Rule: Embrace technology – whatever your age

woman smiling at laptop

COVID-19 has proven to us more than ever how integral new technology is to the modern world. It is helping us to stay connected with loved ones and it is making jobs that we never thought could be done outside of the office be done just as well from home.

If you are in the latter stages of your career, you may have resisted training in technology, seeing it as a “Millennial skill.” However, sharpening your tech skills will make you more versatile and even more valuable to employers.

There are free mini-courses you can do online to familiarize yourself with all sorts of digital technology. If you never thought technical skills would be relevant to your job, the current social distancing measures have changed the game – even school teachers are having to get to grips with the virtual world, learning how to teach their classes remotely.

Rule #5

Old Rule: Stay in one industry for life

New Rule: Open the door to new industries with transferable skills

If you think a career change may be on the cards for you, think about developing skills that all employers value, like communications and leadership.

Learning skills outside of your current or most recent occupation may make it easier to enter a new industry.

Rule #6

Old Rule: Attend networking events to build your contacts

New Rule: Build a professional network – online

Social-Network

Networking is still important to grow your connections but you can now reach more people online than you ever could at a face-to-face event.

LinkedIn is your first port of call – set up a profile, send out some connection requests (personalize your invites so you stand out), follow companies you would like to work for, and join interest groups related to your chosen field.

Twitter can also be a good networking tool if you are in marketing, journalism, or communications. Follow people in your line of work, see what they are talking about, and join in the conversation with your own insights.

Rule #7

Old Rule: Office-based work is more secure

New Rule: Make your job work remotely

woman working and a cat looking out the window

Traditionally, we have been conditioned to believe having a place of work to go to is more stable than working from home.

Since the Coronavirus hit, many of us have been transitioned to working remotely – an option we may never have considered before. What does that mean long-term?

If you are one of the people working in travel, hospitality, or retail who cannot carry out their jobs remotely, you might be looking at ways to ensure you do not find yourself in a similar situation in the future.

This is a good time for you to consider learning new skills that will enable you to seek alternative remote work should something like this happen again. Whether it be a free course on data input or seeing how you can turn your passion for social media into a full-time career, think about having a back-up plan or use this opportunity to find a work-from-home job you love.

There are so many jobs you can do remotely. Here is a wide selection (some will require more training than others):

  • Digital marketing
  • Journalism
  • Editing and proofreading
  • Graphic design
  • Web development
  • Sales
  • Recruitment
  • Accounting
  • Bookkeeping
  • Data entry
  • Counselor
  • Psychologist
  • Hypnotherapist
  • Life Coach
  • Online tutor
  • Virtual assistant
  • Public relations/communications
  • Customer service representative

1. Change Your Mindset To Enjoy Greater Wealth

Financial Success in 2020: Change your mindset

The number one thing you can do right now to help you make you more money in 2021, is to change your mindset. When you truly understand the key to success and how to get your mind working with you rather than against you, your earning potential can become limitless.

By shifting focus, evaluating and reprogramming your money mindset, you will be able to see things from a much clearer perspective. You will be able to finally break free from the constraints holding you back and you will be able to prosper in financial abundance.

If you want to understand how to make more money in 2020, it is essential to change your mindset to enjoy greater wealth and affluence. This article will show you how…

2. How Can I Be Rich And Prosperous?

World-renowned celebrity therapist, Marisa Peer, shared her secrets to success and how anyone can overcome money blocks to be rich and prosperous in a recent free webinar.

Marisa said “I’ve been a therapist for 33 years now and I’ve had the most phenomenal success at helping clients overcome their money issues and money blocks.

People tend to think that “Surely, if I had more money, it solves all my problems.” Actually, that’s not true. I’ve met many clients who have money blocks and money issues, regardless of how much money they have. When they get more money, they just get rid of it.

That’s why it has been claimed that 70% of lottery winners are absolutely broke within three to five years. They win a huge amount of money, sometimes millions of dollars, and they go broke. Do you know why the 30% don’t go broke? They have a different relationship with money.” This comes down to someone’s money mindset.

3. What Is A Money Mindset?

A money mindset refers to your core beliefs about money, many of which would have been conditioned into you as a child, without any conscious control. These core beliefs define your attitude and relationship to money, often directly determining your financial success.

Financial Success in 2020: Money Mindset

Familiar expressions such as “money doesn’t grow on trees” or “there’s never enough money” are things you have probably heard many times and may even believe to be true. These could have subconsciously created money blocks, which you may not even be aware of.

4. What Are Money Blocks?

Money blocks are limiting core beliefs you may have about money. They are deeply rooted and can subconsciously limit or block your success, causing money issues.

Marisa Peer says “behind money blocks is an underlying belief that I’m worthless.

I’m not worthy of money.” She also teaches that many people believe that money is simply not available to them. This could have come from things you heard as a child, which you believed to be true, so they became true to you.

In her insightful webinar Marisa revealed “Your beliefs about money are wired into you before you are five years old… If you hear things when you are growing up like “I can’t find the money… I know you’ve got this school trip. I know you need more school shoes, but I can’t find the money.” That’s a very odd thing to say to a child, because now your child grows up believing you have to find money. I’m walking around the streets looking, but I haven’t found any. That’s a mistake. You say to a child, “I need to make the money. I need to earn the money.” It’s about showing them that they can find a way of earning money, not finding it.

Financial Success in 2020: Money Blocks

Smart parents will build a positive association with money. If the child says “Mommy, I really, really, really, really need this toy,” you can say “Okay. You need to get 200 stars to get that toy, how can you earn those? Maybe you’re going to have to empty the dishwasher or clean the car.” You are empowering your children to learn that you can find ways to make money.

It does involve hard work, but I do what I love and I love what I do. When you do want you love and love what you do, you feel like you can never work a day in your life. I love my job so much. I’ll never do anything else because it makes me so happy. It gives me meaning, it gives me certainty, it gives me connection, it gives me diversity and it gives me phenomenal earning too.”

So if you ever heard your parents or significant adults saying things like: “I’ll never be rich….” “How the other half lives…” or “Money is the root of all evil” this may have become a deeply rooted, subconscious belief. If you want to overcome your money blocks you need to understand what is blocking your success and change your money mindset.

5. What Is Blocking Your Success?

Financial Success in 2020: Success blockers

What is your relationship with money? What beliefs do you have about money? Do you believe that money is always available to you? Do you feel wealthy? Do you have a healthy money mindset? Or are you limiting your own success with subconscious money blocks?

Once you get clear on this you can start to explore and question it, breaking free of the hold it may have over you. As Marisa Peer teaches with her revolutionary Rapid Transformational Therapy™ (RTT™), the moment you start to question something, it loses its power over you as absolute truth. Marisa shared exactly how to change your money mindset and overcome success blockers, which we shall explore now…

In this article, we discuss how your scarcity mindset or beliefs around money are formed and how they can block you from living your best life. When you know how to reprogram your beliefs about money you can use your thoughts to make your life truly successful.

“If Only I Could Win The Lottery…”

Is Your Scarcity Mindset Blocking You?

So many people think “I love money. If I won the lottery, it would change my life. If I had money, I would never get rid of it.” However, studies say that 70% of people who win big on the lottery are bankrupt in three years.

Only last week in the British paper, The Sun, was a story on Michael Carroll ‘a skint coalman who works seven days a week, but swears he’s “happier now” after blowing his £9.7million winnings.

I’ve seen that in my own experience. I worked with many lottery winners, they all said the same thing. “You know, when I got that money I was so unused to it. I didn’t really know what to do with it and I got rid of it all.”

The mind is hardwired to return to what is familiar

Scientific studies have proven that we go back to what we are used to. Therefore, people who have never had money actually get rid of it, so that they can get back to what they know. The 30% of lottery winners who keep their money are the ones who already had money. I’m telling you this because your relationship with money before the age of five, what you hear about money, what you learn about money, tends to colour your life.

What Did You Hear About Money Growing Up?

Scarcity Mindset - Your Beliefs From Before The Age of 5

Your scarcity mindset about money before the age of five impact your relationship with money right now. I know that to be true, I have seen this with thousands of people and in my own life too.

For instance, I would ask my parents, “Can I have money to buy something?” I would often hear: “No, that’s too expensive.” “No, I can’t afford that.” “Why do you need that? That’s a waste of money.” My dad always had his expression of “A fool and his money are easily parted,” which he used to justify not giving money away.

For a long time, it was very hard for me to spend money because of the scarcity mindset I heard as a child. It was very hard for me to believe I was worth it. You see, to get more you have to believe you’re worth more. Essentially it comes down to your beliefs, which can be reprogrammed once you know how.

Bananas Or Businesses?

My brother was considered the brains in the family. He went to a private school, and I went to the local state school, because he was considered the smart one. From his private school, he would come home with his homework, which would say something like: You have 12 companies and you sell four. How many companies have you got left?

In comparison, my homework said: You have six bananas, you give three away. How many have you got left? Isn’t that interesting? My equity is bananas and I give three of them. I’ve only got half my equity left, because I’ve given the rest away. However, my brother sells his equity. Even at a very early age, what are you learning? You give half your stuff away and you don’t have any left, versus looking at something as a business opportunity and investment.

All through my life I saw that, in private schools, they would talk about investment and equity, whereas the state schools were all about bananas, apples and pears. That’s what schools were doing without meaning to. Smart schools are now realising the power of their words and teaching children to talk about investments.

Your Words Matter

When parents say “I can’t find the money” that makes the child believe you’ll go through life trying to find money. If they go through life passively trying to find money they won’t find very much.

However, parents can say “If you want that you are going to have to earn the money. So what could you do to earn the money?” You are then teaching a small child, “You have a skill and you can monetize that skill to get the things you want.” They will also likely enjoy the toy so much more, than if you just give it to them.

When you improve your relationship with money you realize that money is just energy, it is a way of exchanging value. It holds less power over us because we see it as a direct result of our own efforts. As I explain in How To Stop Spending Money your deep-rooted scarcity mindset and what you believe you are worth will really affect your relationship with money.

How To Have A Better Relationship With Money?

Look At Your Scarcity Mindset

You have to go back and look at your limiting beliefs about money. Then you have to challenge the scarcity mindset. You have to ask yourself, “Who told me that belief and what did they know? Why do I believe that to be true?” When you’ve challenged that belief, then you’ve got to change it to something more empowering like “I am worth it. I’m worth more. I deserve it.”

To really help you manifest money, think about who will benefit from you having money? If you’re going to keep all your money tightly locked away and not give any away, then you’re having a negative relationship with money. Instead of thinking “I’ve got to hold onto it so tightly because I might never get more.” You can say “Right. When I have more this person is going to benefit, that person is going to benefit.”

The more reasons you can come up with for having more money, the more people who will benefit from you having more money, the more money you will have, as your relationship will be a much more positive one.

Eradicate Conflicting Scarcity Mindset About Money

Let’s imagine, you have a good belief that you want more money and you’re making more money. You have a gift you are going to monetize. You believe that you are going to help humanity by having more money…. That’s your belief and you are going to move towards that like a rocket.

However, if you also have another deeper-rooted belief along the lines of “Yeah, but I don’t really deserve it.” “I don’t have any skills or know how to make that money.” “People won’t like me if I make money. My friends will desert me; they’ll be jealous of me. Nobody liked the rich kids at school …”. You can’t go forward like a rocket when conflicting beliefs are holding you down.

You can’t expand and contract simultaneously. So let’s imagine you want a millionaire mindset that expands towards wealth, towards money, towards deserving more. Knowing that the more you have, the more other people will have. However, you can’t move towards expansion and also be in contraction.

You see, the mind wants to move forward towards positive beliefs. However if you have beliefs that conflict, it becomes more like a tumble dryer. The conflicting beliefs are making you go into a spin. “I want it, but I don’t deserve it.” “I want it, but I don’t know how to get it.” “I want it, but I’m not worthy.” You have to get rid of the negative beliefs and just fill up your mind with positive ones. Only then you can move towards money.

Give And Take

You have to give and receive. Some people just give and give and give. I was recently working with a woman who had four different jobs and never charged anyone. She was struggling, was in pain and had all these illnesses because she pushed herself so much.

Scarcity Mindset - Give and Take

I said to her, “This is not right. You have to charge for what you do. If you don’t charge for what you do, it has no value.” You have to put a value on yourself. If your product is cheap, or if you give stuff away for free, nobody values it.

Many years ago, I was asked by a company to hypnotise their staff to stop smoking and the company paid. I usually have a 94% success rate of stopping people smoking. However, I noticed with these employees the success rate wasn’t 94%. I realised it was because it was free for them. They thought “I’ll go and see Marisa and have a session to stop smoking. It doesn’t matter if it works. I get an afternoon off work and who cares?”

I decided to do things differently. I told them that they must pay for their own session, but that they would be reimbursed a year later if they had still stopped. The success rate went up as they started to see that “If I don’t make this work, I pay. If I make it work, my company pays.”

The more something is worth, the more we value it. People will value you when you are of value. It’s also true that when you know that you are worth it, others will know it too. When you believe in yourself, others believe in you too. Know that you have a gift and by sharing it with the world you are giving value and therefore must receive value in return.

Give Life-Changing Value

When you give life-changing value, you receive life-changing value. I empower all of my graduates to be phenomenal therapists, so that they are not just dramatically transforming their clients’ lives every day, but their own and their loved one’s lives too.

Goal Setting: How To Become a Pro in Self Accountability https://marisapeer.com/self-accountability/ Fri, 06 Sep 2019 15:26:11 +0000 https://marisapeer.com/?p=36978 Learn how to become a Pro in self accountability and achieve any goal you set for yourself.

In her latest book, I Am Enough, Marisa Peer talks about how there is no shortcut to goal setting and accountability, but there is a guarantee. Marisa explains:

“I always get asked: ”what makes a successful person stick to their goals?” The answer is that there is no single shortcut to this.

We live in a culture that’s obsessed with life hacks and quick fixes, but when it comes to the path to success, there really isn’t one outward trick. However, in place of that, there is a kind of guarantee: if you show up to something, each and every day, you’re guaranteed to get closer to it. If you don’t, you won’t.

I’ve worked with a lot of Olympic athletes and they always serve as a good role model of this. Viewers at home see the moments of glory as they compete and win medals. The athletes, meanwhile, see the years of pain and sacrifice it took to get there. As Olympic swimmer, Matt Biondi, is quoted as saying, “persistence can change failure into extraordinary achievement.” The same is true for you.

self accountability and goal setting

A great example of the power of consistency is what usually happens around Christmas and the holidays. We can enter the month with a solid workout or health routine and say, “I’m just going to take four days off.” And then, all of a sudden, it’s mid-January and we haven’t been to the gym in three weeks.

If you allow yourself to remove the guarantee of “showing up,” the habit very often falls apart and ceases to be important to you. But when you take action every day – even if it means just going for a brisk walk or doing some stretches for example – you

continue to move closer to it with ease. Once again, there is no shortcut, but there is a guarantee: show up and you’ll see results.

RTT quote

As you move closer to your goal, your goal will begin moving closer to you

Doing one thing every day, without fail, in service of who or what you want to be is a guaranteed way to improve the reflection you see of yourself. Once you do that, everything improves, as you begin to believe in yourself and your own capabilities. Then it becomes far easier to move towards everything in life that you want.

I am enough mirror

It’s not “too good to be true”

“But Marisa, can just five or ten minutes a day doing something really make me successful?” I can hear your doubts from here. The answer is yes, it can.

It’s not too good to be true because the effect of this practice multiplies across your life and, more importantly, your attitude towards your life. When you feel better about yourself you start to conduct yourself with the air of someone who is successful, which in turn makes you successful.

It doesn’t matter how big or small the daily action is, what matters is that you’re beginning to act like a winner.

Self accountability: Make your mind accountable

You should really begin to think of your mind as a goal-seeking laser. Just as it listens to the words and pictures you tell yourself to inform how it thinks, it also loves to have concrete goals to work towards. The more specific you can make these, the better. So, it’s not “I want to be successful” but rather, “by next year, I want to have written a book draft” or “I want to lose 100 pounds by February” or “I want to commit to cooking more healthy foods during the workweek.”

You may think: “Well, I’m not the kind of person who can stick to anything; I always give up.” But that’s just a story you’re telling yourself.

What stories are you telling yourself and how do you show up?

Goal Setting: How To Become a Pro in Self Accountability

If you go to the finish line of any marathon and ask the runners if they’ve always loved running, a stunning number of them will insist “NO!” They went from couch potatoes to marathon runners because they began to form a habit of action that they showed up for.

They changed their minds about who they are—and you can do the same. It just requires being specific and relentlessly showing up.

Start small

I will say, though, that when you are first getting started in establishing this habit of action, you should think carefully about what the one thing you’re going to start with might be.

It doesn’t have to be an extreme commitment. Too often, I see people take on overly-ambitious goals and set themselves up for failure. Just as with a client who wanted to get fit and lose weight, I don’t instruct him to start running 10K every morning; I told him to simply walk around his neighborhood every day. Once he did that, the motivation to do more began to appear. One of my favorite sayings, because it’s so true is…

Movement Manifests Motivation

This is all about choosing to commit to something that is going to make you feel like a winner and move you towards your goals.

In the best-case scenario, I want you to choose to do something every day that takes you closer to your goal, be it writing, meditation, exercise or working on your business plan.

Accountability mechanisms

Another way to set yourself up for success with your new habit is to have an accountability mechanism. This can really help people stick to a goal.

Tell your family or partners (so long as they’re supportive of you) about your new goal and ask them to encourage you. Join a social media group of like-minded people sharing their goals or set up a workout buddy you can text with once a day. All of these will increase your chances of sticking to your new goal.

Whether it’s a career goal, a self-care goal, or a personal, spiritual, or creative goal, pick one thing you’re going to commit to doing every day for the next few months.

Believe in it and enjoy watching the consistency play out in your life in beautiful and unexpected ways. And remember, what you want, wants you. What you are moving towards is moving towards you. You just have to take the first step.”

Marisa Peer quotes

You can also get a coach or have a session of Rapid Transformational Therapy to help you achieve your goals and accelerate your ability to master new positive habits.

Alternatively, you can even become your own coach and practice self accountability.  This free quiz reveals your unique super power as a coach.

Make time – book out your diary as you would for anyone else

Schedule time in your diary to focus on your goal and stick to it. Everyone else schedules your time, so why shouldn’t you?  Prioritise yourself – you are the boss of you – and you have a job to do. As Marisa says:

“The habit of action is so essential: Do one thing each day in the direction of your dreams…

learn to be accountable

Once you do that and begin doing one small thing a day, you will see how powerful the practice of habit and repetition really is.

Do the things that successful people do and you will become successful too

When you do the things that very successful people do, you unknowingly become more and more like them. This is very true when it comes to this habit of action. You see, committing to a small task every day in service of your dreams of success makes you feel like a winner.

Once you feel that way, you begin to act differently. You begin to take on the air of a successful person and believe that you are successful. This can have an effect on how other people treat you, how you treat yourself, and what you attract into your life.

It may seem like a small step, but it’s in service of a much bigger goal.”

You can read more practical advice in I Am Enough, designed to transform you from the inside out, to achieve success in every key area of your life. How searching for a job you love might be holding you back from succeeding https://marisapeer.com/how-searching-for-a-job-you-love-might-be-holding-you-back-from-succeeding/ Fri, 30 Nov 2018 16:12:34 +0000 https://www.marisapeer.com/?p=34544 Why you should stop holding up to a popular myth about finding your perfect job.

I frequently work with Olympic athletes and regularly use them as excellent examples of what can be achieved when you develop a winning mindset.

What many people overlook when they see Olympic athletes receiving their medals is the hard work, grit, and determination that goes on behind the scenes.

Ask any Olympic medalist how they feel about getting up at the crack of dawn to train in the cold and in the dark or how much pain and sacrifice they have endured in order to reach their level of success. They will tell you that this is the part of their job that they don’t like but they knew it was what they had signed up for. If I was to ask them would they trade it for a different career they will say no, never. You see, contrary to popular belief, disliking or even hating some parts of your job does not mean you’ve picked the wrong one.

Even that ideal job we dream of having will have its downsides. If you really want to aim for a top career, you will need to accept there will still be parts of it you dislike or don’t enjoy. Just as an athlete must take grueling and often punishing training schedules to acquire the necessary fitness levels to win those medals. Just as a movie star must spend long hours of solitude learning scripts and endure long shoots in difficult locations away from home for months on end.

In his book Born for This, Chris Guillebeau talks about the Joy-Money-Flow model: “winning the career lottery,” he says, “happens at the intersection between work that you like to do, work that supports and sustains you financially, and work that you’re really good at.” In short, it’s possible to do a job you love and get paid for it, but inevitably you’ve got to put the effort in and sometimes that means doing things you really don’t want to do, don’t like and don’t enjoy.

Success loves determination

The people who are the most successful are the people who stick to their goals, no matter how often they must do tasks and jobs that they dislike in order to get there. Such people understand that although we live in a society which is continually looking for the next best hack, the only way to derive success for the long term is to work at it. This means that there’s no one trick to get us to our goals, but rather a steely determination to get the job done.

Sacrifice is the key word here. Everything we do in our lives involves a sacrifice of some sort. Whether that be in our roles as parents, partners, friends or workers, life will regularly hand us restrictions and force us to decide or balance up our options. Yet, if we care enough and want it enough, we’ll be more successful by working through those tougher of times.

For the Olympic athlete, building resistance means pushing through the pain threshold to get the best training times. Whereas for those of us working, it means doing those tedious tasks that we may feel are below us and are often unrewarding. It’s all about persisting when faced with situations we really don’t like and seeing things through to completion rather than only applying ourselves to the tasks we like and enjoy.

Redesign your beliefs

So many people believe they can find that perfect job which will offer complete satisfaction at all times and that will neither feel like nor require hard work in return. Unfortunately, by developing this mindset, you are fooling yourself. Nothing, not even your dream job, can be pleasurable or uplifting all the time, and if you don’t believe and accept this you set yourself up to feel deluded and disappointed.

Instead, by redesigning your current life and working to make subtle changes, you can turn this mindset around and use it to your advantage. This is a vital and much needed technique for anyone when looking for a new job or wanting to maximize the enjoyment of your current job. Just as an athlete can’t win events without training, neither can a professional or entrepreneur succeed without doing tasks they dislike. Once you train your mind to accept this, you give yourself a much better mindset when facing those tasks you don’t like.

When you find yourself faced with tasks you hate or actively dislike the key to success is to do them first. All successful people share in common a trait of doing the things they don’t want to do first. They understand that getting the jobs that we hate done first makes us feel like a winner because we are immediately free from the dread of having to attend to them later rather than have them weigh heavily on our mind through the day. When you attend to unwanted tasks first you feel good about yourself all day because you are free to get on with doing what you enjoy and do best.

The Four Traits of Successful People https://marisapeer.com/four-traits-of-successful-people/ Wed, 07 Aug 2013 11:52:01 +0000 https://www.marisapeer.com/?p=3039 People often come to my office for a session with me or buy my books when they feel they haven’t achieved enough success in their lives. They ask me to tell them what the traits of successful people are, how they can become successful in their career, achieve their creative ambitions, or just create and stick to healthy habits such as exercise and healthy eating.

“Belief without talent will take you further than talent without belief’

So much of success comes down to belief in yourself. I always tell my clients the quote above, and it’s so true. It’s why some people who have little talent but tons of ambition manage to get to the top of their fields. If you have talent and belief in yourself, you are quite literally unstoppable.

With that said, in all my time helping my clients become successful people, I have found that there are 4 traits of successful people that they all share. Remember that even if you don’t have these traits currently, all you have to do to attain them is create new habits. Never forget that what you do quickly becomes who you are. First you make your habits and then your habits make you.

The Four Traits Of Successful People

The 4 Traits of successful people

1. Willing To Do The Things They HATE To Get To Where They Want To Be

Often, the things we dislike—exercise, studying, organising, working on weekends or dieting—are what stand between us and our goals. Successful people don’t shy away from these things, they learn to endure them by creating new habits and changing the way they talk about them. So, instead of “Ugh, I hate it when I can’t eat carbs” they say “I love the way resisting sugar and bloating foods makes me feel.” Instead of saying “I hate exercise it’s so boring” they say “my body loves working out.” They say this over and over until, guess what, they begin to believe it.

2. Never Take No For An Answer

It’s true that some successful people make it look easy, as if they’re always attracting the right people and opportunities into their life. But the truth is, success doesn’t come to people, people go to it. So people that have achieved things you admire have undoubtedly spent day after day refusing to accept anything but “yes.” If someone turns down their proposal, doesn’t give them the job, or tells them they’re unqualified, they simply take the criticism, improve what they can, and move on to the next opportunity. Absolutely nothing replaces persistence.

3. Do The Things They Don’t Want To Do FIRST

This trait of successful people isn’t an easy task. When I first began writing my books, it didn’t come easy to me. I had a young child, I felt like I was always on a deadline and I used to do everything I could possibly imagine before actually sitting down to write. These days, I write first thing without even brushing my hair or even going downstairs, because over the years I’ve trained myself to tackle what used to be a difficult task first. So if you hate exercise, don’t wait until the end of the day. If you have an annoying task to do, schedule it for the first part of your day. Getting this type of task done sooner will also boost your sense of achievement which you’ll carry with you for the rest of your day.

4. Take Action Every Day In Pursuit Of Your Goals

Traits of successful people - Take Action

This one’s quite simple, but so many people make excuses not to do it. If you want to be a writer, you must write every day (even if you don’t have a book contract); if you want to lose weight, you must make positive food and activity choices everyday (even if you’re busy at work); if you want to be more organised, you must choose one area of your house to clear up every day (even if it’s just one drawer or table top). If you want your products to be known you have to make marketing calls every day. It doesn’t have to be a huge accomplishment every day, but taking piece-meal steps daily will help you accrue a sense of accomplishment that will drive you toward your goals.

To complete all these steps and make them part of your life, you must erase the words “should,” “try,” and “maybe” from your mental script. Your mind is much like a classroom full of children—it knows exactly what to do, but it won’t do it until you explicitly command it so. Begin phrasing everything you say to yourself in the affirmative, take action toward your goals and you will be amazed at what you can achieve.

Reprogram your mind for success and get a millionaire mindset with hypnotic wealth wiring audio.

8 Time Management Strategies For Superwoman Syndrome https://marisapeer.com/time-management-strategies/ Tue, 20 Mar 2012 15:18:56 +0000 https://www.marisapeer.com/?p=775 Are you suffering from superwoman syndrome? If so, you will need these 8 time management strategies to help you juggle your work, life, and family better.

Victoria Beckham has said she’s knackered after being a new mum and working as a fashion designer, because she is always either working or being a mum and is constantly tired…..she suffers from superwoman syndrome.

It’s never good being superwoman as you are always trying to make everything perfect and to be perfect.

People who try to be perfect are generally unhappy because they are in a race with no finishing line. Every time they get near, it moves out of their reach. Being perfect will never make you happy. Whereas finding a balance between your work, family and social life can bring untold happiness.

8 Time Management Strategies To Manage Your Life

Time Management Strategies - Optimize Daily Actions

1. Set Priorities And Assess Your Schedule

When you look at how you spend your time you may notice you waste hours on Facebook or spend too long ironing or trying to find lost items.

2. Optimize Your Daily Actions

The trick of using time management strategies is always to work smarter not harder so get into the habit of always putting things away so you don’t waste time looking for keys, glasses etc. If you only ever put your stuff in 3 different places you will always be able to find it. It’s the same with passwords, if you only have 3 you don’t waste time trying to remember them.

Pay all your bills by direct debit as this saves time. Buy more ready to wear clothes especially for the kids and only iron essentials, not things like sheets and towels. Have your shopping delivered once a week and if you don’t feel like you see your children enough take them with you to go food shopping and make it fun for both of you, beat that superwoman syndrome.

Dictate letters on the commute to work and buy a machine that lets you dictate emails as it saves so much time.

3. Get Used To Saying No

No one can do everything so get used to saying no. People who try to be perfect don’t know when or how to say no because they feel that no one can do the job as well as them or their company can’t function without them.

You are not superwoman and when you say no your company will find another way to get the job done and it won’t make you dispensable.

4. Prioritise work and social

Prioritise at work and even socially. Quickly decide whether a task or invite is a MUST do, a COULD do or a NICE to do. Then accept the MUST’s and let the rest go, unless you have free time. It will mean you’re not overloaded with low priority tasks and thus avoid becoming burnt out both at work and at home.

When you’re at work cut back on anything social, discourage social visits, calls or social lunches so you can commit 100% to work without any distractions. When you are at home don’t check your phone or emails unless it’s essential, then you can 100% switch off and commit to your family. By eliminating distractions you will get more done and set boundaries so you can finish work on time, as rushing everywhere late just adds to stress.

5. Give Yourself Realistic Deadlines

Don’t give yourself impossible or tight deadlines as they will make you work in a panic and under pressure. Make your deadlines reasonable and do-able and if it feels too much slow down. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, slowing down you will actually be more productive. Working faster doesn’t mean you’ll be more productive or accomplish more but doing it slowly and getting it right the first time you will actually accomplish more and save time.

6. Get Help

Time Management Strategies - Get Help

You don’t have to do everything! Recruit help from colleagues and get your kids involved in emptying the washing machine, putting clothes and groceries away etc, banish that superwoman syndrome tendency!

7. Do The Jobs You Hate First

Successful people always do the jobs they hate first so don’t procrastinate on any jobs as this is a major time waster and stress inducer.

8. De-clutter & Streamline

De-clutter. Streamlining your workspace and your home helps you focus. Throw away papers, magazines and mail once you have looked through them. Also delete emails once they are done and then you won’t be overwhelmed as a clear space helps you to have a clear mind.
