Maybe the inability to stop thinking about something has even begun to disrupt your satisfaction and happiness in your everyday life. You go to work thinking about it. Try to enjoy a catch-up with a friend, and you are still thinking about it. 

You just want to stop thinking. 

If you can’t seem to stop obsessing about something, don’t worry, you are in the right place. I will share effective ways on how to stop thinking about something and how to do it fast.

Whether it is connected to anxiety about the future, a limiting belief that is holding you back, or even a consequence of past trauma, it may feel as though this negative thought is taking away from your present health and wellbeing. 

In fact, negative thoughts can significantly wear a person down, even resulting in depression and anxiety. 

So, why does negative thinking happen? Throughout the past three decades working as a therapist, I have noticed a few main reasons why recurring negative thoughts happen most often. 

Sometimes, there seems to be a legitimate reason why we can’t stop thinking about something, whether it be trying to solve a problem or proactively planning ahead and trying to avoid any undesired outcomes.

In other cases, however, neurons in your brain might get “stuck in a loop” where they continue to fire, presenting the thought to you non-stop. 

These repeated thoughts can also emerge as a consequence of a bad habit.

No matter what your reason is, in most cases, these thoughts are not helpful or useful in any way. More often than not, the more this thinking process continues, the more stressed and anxious you get. You are likely Googling, “How to stop thinking about something,” because you feel frustrated and you want to change it. 

It could be the first time this has happened to you, or perhaps you are fed up with this automatic negative thought loop in your mind. Either way, it is important to learn how to stop negative thoughts so that you can enjoy your life and get the most out of it.

How To Get Rid of Negative Thoughts

When you can’t stop thinking about something for some time, you might want to ignore or suppress the thought. However, this usually does not work. Moreover, it can lead to becoming fixated on the thought even more.

A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology observed that when participants were told not to think about a white bear, they actually thought about it more. 

In fact, suppressing this thought led it to be more prominent in the participants’ minds. This means that simply trying to ignore or suppress the thought does not work. However, there are other ways that do, such as the six methods below. So let’s answer the question, “How do I stop thinking about something?” once and for all, and help you move forward with your life.

1. Determine If you’re ruminating or problem-solving

Are you dwelling on the problem? Or are you trying to come up with solutions? 

This is important to differentiate between. 

Ruminating means that you are focusing on what went wrong or what could go wrong, as opposed to taking a proactive approach to solve the problem or ensure the situation goes right.

For example, maybe your boss gave you a poor performance report. All you can focus on is how badly you did and what a horrible employee you are. You think that maybe you will lose your job. You replay what your boss said over and over again in your mind and continue to dwell on it.

As a result, these stressful thoughts activate your “fight-or-flight” response. This can make it very difficult to problem-solve as your brain is not in a relaxed state where it can think of creative solutions. Instead, your body and mind are stressing about whether you will have a job tomorrow or not.

This is not helpful, nor is it productive.

Your thoughts influence your feelings, your feelings influence your actions, and your actions define the outcomes of your events. So if you change your thinking, you change everything.

This rumination may actually lead to you performing worse at work.

To avoid the rumination trap, start thinking about a solution. What can you do about it? You could plan to go to work the next day and do your very best. You could take the feedback your boss gave you and focus on improving your weaknesses. 

Remember, your thoughts are entirely within your control. 

Focusing on solutions allows you to take action and do something about the thought. Switch the narrative and problem-solve.

2. Proactively change your brain’s channel

While simply not thinking about the thought does not work, distracting yourself with other tasks can.

Doing so proactively changes your brain’s channel, diverting your energy away from the recurring negative thought. In a way, it works similarly to changing the channel on your TV.

For this, you need to engage in an activity that requires a ton of mental energy. Usually, this is something that makes you feel good, and it may vary from person to person. What works for your friend might not work for you and vice versa.

Some examples include:

  • Calling a friend and talk about something positive
  • Playing an instrument
  • Performing intense physical activity
  • Planning your next vacation
  • Blasting some of your favorite music and dancing
  • Reading a book

The goal is to find something that is mentally engaging and that you enjoy. This will reprogram your mind by introducing happier thoughts and directing your energy elsewhere so that you don’t think about the same negative thought again and again—whether that means you stop thinking about someone or you stop overthinking in general.

3. Change the words you say to change the picture in your mind

During my thirty years as a therapist, I observed how the mind works and compiled a list of rules of the mind. Understanding and applying these rules will allow you to take control of your mind and thoughts.

One of the rules is “Your mind will always do what it thinks you want it to do.”

Your mind creates a picture of your reality with words you say every day—no matter whether they are good or bad, true or false, your mind is always listening. Therefore, when you continue to tell yourself negative words or phrases, your mind will paint an even more vivid negative picture and make it your reality.

Another rule is that “Whatever you focus on, you will get more of.” If you focus on these negative thoughts, you are going to get more negative thoughts and negativity in your life in general. 

At the same time, the mind learns by repetition. The more you repeat something, the greater the response will be. 

Knowing these rules of the mind can be a great advantage. You can give your mind clear instructions and repeat them in order to reprogram your mind. 

For example, if what your boss said to you during your performance feedback bothered you, you could simply say, “I am happy to get feedback and the opportunity to improve.” You can make a choice on how you want to see the situation and clearly communicate it to your mind.

After deciding on a positive phrase, repeat it to yourself. This will solidify it in your mind. You can further visualize this and create a picture of how you will improve on this feedback. Maybe you will ensure you get your reports in on time, or perhaps you will set multiple alarms to make sure you are on time or early for work each and every day. 

Harnessing the power of your mind and the rules of your mind can help you understand how to stop thinking about something, allowing you to move forward with your day and your life.

4. Write it out or talk about it with someone you trust

It can be hard to understand our thoughts or come up with solutions when we keep going around in circles in our heads about it. Yet, writing it out or talking to someone you trust can help you sort through your thoughts, as well as get rid of them. 

Research has shown that writing down any unwanted and negative thoughts on a piece of paper and then throwing it away can significantly change your perception about the thought. 

By throwing the thought away, you are influencing how you think about it. You are physically telling your mind that it does not matter, and your mind responds to what you tell it. So choose to tell it good things instead. 

If you are thinking about a worst-case scenario, write down what you are afraid could happen and why you would still be okay. 

Usually, these worst-cases are not as bad as we make them out to be. You might be telling yourself that you would just die if this worst-case scenario were to happen. In reality, this is highly unlikely. In fact, some difficult situations in life can actually lead to better circumstances, such as getting out of a toxic relationship or losing a job just to find a new job you actually enjoy. 

Talking to someone you trust can also provide a stress release. They could help you gain new perspectives and ways to think about the negative thought.

5. Meditate

Meditation is a wonderful practice that can help you control your mind’s attention and focus. Studies indicate that mindfulness meditation can also stop intrusive thoughts. 

Regular meditation practices can further help you live in the moment more, preventing thought wandering. 

Mind-wandering tends to occur due to a higher activation of the default-mode network (DMN). The DMN is associated with various clinical disorders, such as ADHD and Alzheimer’s disease. 

Research demonstrates that it’s possible to reduce activity in the DMN through mindfulness meditation. Particularly, this research shows that mindfulness meditation that focuses on one entity or object can help you maintain attention and an acceptance attitude during meditation. 

How to do it:

During your first few sessions, set a timer to two minutes. During later sessions, you can gradually increase the duration. 

Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight, and close your eyes. 

Focus on each inhale and exhale, while taking full and deep belly breaths. 

Thoughts may arise. Notice them and let them pass. 

Don’t judge yourself if you get distracted. Gently bring your attention back to the breath.

This simple practice can help you now and in the future when it comes to stopping bad thoughts. Meditation may also help you focus on getting what you want out of your life, as opposed to what you do not. Regular practice is essential when it comes to meditation having beneficial consequences on your life.

This is because the subconscious mind of a person who has an emotional wound around relationships can associate new experiences with past trauma.

3. Practice self-love

Often we can be our own worst critics.

We could be angry at ourselves for not being the kind of ‘calm and collected’ person we aspire to be. 

We can criticize ourselves and say things like, “I am immature, needy, or stupid.” 

Sometimes, we might even feel we deserve being mistreated because a part of us feels that somehow we deserve it. 

It is at these moments that self-love is crucial. 

Your past experiences, traumas, emotions, upbringing, and mistakes do not define you. At your core, you are already perfect the way you are.

Aaron Hernandez was one of the most famous players of the National Football League (NFL) and was also a convicted murderer. Hernandez’s footballing career came to an abrupt end in 2013 when he was convicted of murdering his friend Odin Lloyd. Hernandez was arrested, convicted and sent to prison for life, without the possibility of parole.

Before becoming a convicted murderer in prison, he had appeared to ‘have it all’ as a famous sports star – celebrated for the 2012 touchdown pass he famously caught. So what led to him being convicted of murder just a year later? It turns out that Aaron Hernandez had a lot of anger in his life…

The Pressure To Be Perfect

People feel under so much pressure to have the perfect “insta-worthy” lifestyle,  but even though we are more connected to technology, we are more disconnected than ever from what matters most.

Feeling like you don’t fit in and belong, or that you are not good enough just as you are, can lead to feelings of isolation, and a paralyzing fear of rejection and failure.

Humans are social creatures and a sense of belonging is essential for us to thrive. We are wired to seek connection and avoid rejection. This is a primary survival instinct that goes back to when we lived in tribes, or when we come on to the planet as babies, when our lives literally depended on needing others.

This is why social exclusion and loneliness can have such damaging consequences, in what we refer to as the Disconnection Epidemic. Researchers have shown that loneliness and rejection activate the same parts of the brain as physical pain, and loneliness can be more dangerous to your health than smoking or obesity.

Feeling different is a major fear for children, young people and even many adults. However, since we all fear being different, that very fear actually makes you the same as everyone and everyone the same as you.

A sign that something needs to change.

Stress, illness, and disease are frequently signs that something needs to change. Reaching our full potential and living a life full of meaning and purpose is easy once you know how.

A Bully – What is a bully and why do they behave the way they do?

When it comes to understanding bullying, Marisa observes that ‘critical people have the most criticism reserved for themselves.’ They have so much self criticism that they act out their own inner troubles in the form of bullying. If you imagine two people on a see-saw, the bully feels so low and bad about themselves at the bottom. They try to tip the scales to raise themselves up, by bringing others down and making them feel bad.

Marisa says that the most critical people are their own worst critics, they are expressing outwardly their own inner criticism, hurt and pain. By understanding this, we can tip the scales back,

maintain our own personal power and even feel sorry for those that are critical, as their external projections reveal how they must feel inside.

No one can criticize you unless you let them!

This powerful truth can change your life. In the book, Ultimate Confidence, Marisa tells the story of a Holy man and a critical journalist. Even though the journalist berates and insults all his beliefs, the Holy man continues to beam with happiness and contentment. Techniques – Marisa’s 5 techniques to deal with criticism and bullying.

The truth is that no one can ever make you feel bad about yourself unless you let them. In her TEDx talk: how to avoid rejection and get connection, Marisa shares these 5 techniques and how ‘no one can reject you without your permission.’

Here are Marisa’s 5 things you can say to someone who tries to criticize you:

  1. “Thank you for sharing that.” If someone says something hurtful, you are acknowledging their opinion, dissipating any negative tension, but you don’t have to let it in or accept it.
  2. “I’m sorry I didn’t hear all of that, please can you repeat that slowly?” By asking them to repeat it and really think about what they are saying, they will often take it back or consider how it may come across.
  3. “Are you trying to hurt my feelings? Are you trying to make me feel bad about myself? Why would you say that?” If there’s a positive intention behind the criticism, by asking this you can understand the motivation behind it.
  4. “Well, that’s not going to work, I am not going to let that in.” Just like the Holy man, you don’t have to accept criticism, you can choose not to let it in. You cannot stop people criticizing, but you can change the way it affects you.
  5. “While we are sharing, did you know that critical people have the most criticism reserved for themselves? They don’t like themselves, they are their own worst critic. Your outer projections reveal a lot about what’s going on inside.” It’s empowering to know that it’s their issues and not yours.

I Am Enough – how can these three words change your life?

I Am Enough is the life-affirming statement Marisa has taught millions of people all over the world how to use to improve their lives. From working with thousands of clients, she believes that the common denominator of all problems is that we don’t feel good enough.

In her book and transformational online course I Am Enough, Marisa reveals how repeating these words every day can dramatically change your life. As the mind learns through repetition and believes what we tell it, the more we repeat a positive belief statement, the more real it becomes in our mind and our reality. Marisa encourages people to mark their mirror with ‘I Am Enough’, put it on their phone and computers, put it next to their bed and everywhere they see it every day.

Be Brave –  stand up, speak out and seek help.

Sometimes the bravest thing to do is to ask for help – take a stand and speak out. When something doesn’t feel right, don’t be afraid to speak up, tell people what is happening and the effect it’s having. You are not alone, being brave is speaking out and accepting help.

When faced with bullying behavior, understandably it can be hard to feel brave. However, even if you just pretend at first, by standing tall and confidently, it sends a signal to you and everyone else that you are bravely standing up to this behavior. Visualize what a brave confident person would look like and then step into that image, pose and posture. Your physiology has an impact on how you feel, so even just standing like a brave confident person can make you feel more brave and confident. Strike a power pose to feel braver.

Speaking out for yourself and others, gaining support and accepting help to improve a situation, is one of the bravest things you can do. Be brave, be open and ask for help when you need it.

Understand how your mind works to become your brain’s best friend.

Marisa shares four simple rules of the mind in this TEDX talk to reach beyond your limits by training your mind.

One of Marisa’s popular sayings is ‘first you make your beliefs and then your beliefs make you.’ This is because whatever you tell your mind it believes, without question. When you understand that your mind responds directly to the pictures and words you tell yourself, you realize that your imagination is the most powerful tool you own.

In her latest book, I Am Enough Marisa says: “The most important words you will ever hear are the ones you say to yourself and believe. Nothing boosts your self-esteem and builds up self-love as praise does. Most people think that praise has to come from external forces, but that’s where they are wrong. Praising yourself holds tremendous power. Praise yourself for who you are as much as for what you do, as this is the fastest way to increase your self-esteem. After all, self-esteem literally means what YOU think of YOU, not what other people think of you (or it would be called other esteem or their esteem!)”

Lemon exercise demonstrating the power of your mind on your body.

In order to see how powerful your mind is and how it responds directly to the images and words you tell it, try this exercise from Marisa’s book: Ultimate Confidence.

Imagine you are holding a lemon in your hand. Look at the outside of it and rub the yellow waxy skin. Squeeze it a little and feel its firmness and its weight. Now imagine raising the lemon to your nose and smelling that unique fresh lemon smell. Imagine cutting the lemon in half and the smell gets stronger. Now imagine biting deeply into the lemon and letting the juice swirl around in your mouth. Taste the sharpness, the fresh citrus flavor. If you have used your imagination well, your mouth will be watering.

Consider the implications of this. When you read those words you were telling your brain you had a lemon. Although it wasn’t actually real, your brain took it seriously and said to your salivary glands, ‘I’m biting a lemon, hurry, wash it away.’ Your glands obeyed.

Every thought you have creates a physical reaction in your body. Your mind doesn’t know the difference between real and imagined, it believes everything you tell it without question and responds accordingly. That experiment is neutral, so physically no good or harm can come from it, but good as well as harm can come from many of the words we use.

Learn to love yourself

We come onto the planet with two very powerful needs:

  1. To avoid the pain of rejection
  2. To seek the pleasure and safety of acceptance and connection

This is a primary instinct we all have, which Marisa explains in her book I Am Enough

Not too long ago our safety came from belonging to tribes or communities and we would have died without love, connection and being accepted into a group. Being alone or rejected was not only scary but life-threatening, which is why most societies practice exclusion as a very effective punishment. These powerful drivers are also why we suffer so much from bullying and social exclusion.

All our behaviors are designed to ensure we survive: we are born with driving needs to find connection and to avoid rejection in order to increase our chance of survival. However, whilst this is a primary instinct deeply rooted within us, we no longer need social acceptance for survival. Our life no longer depends on needing to fit in, we do not need everyone to like us. Knowing this is liberating. Happiness is an inside job.

Learning to love yourself means being your own ally, friend, and cheerleader, even when your world isn’t doing that for you. It means seeing the inherent value in what you can offer, building up those around you, because you know how to build up yourself.

You are kind to others as you are kind to yourself first. Because you know that you are responsible for the words and images you let into your head, you can make sure your mind is working for you and not against you.

When you know how to fall in love with yourself you know that love is always available to you. Feeling loved from within is key to feeling happy and successful.

You… are unique!

Just like your fingerprints, you are completely unique and individual. No one else in the whole world has your exact combination of DNA, talents, interests, skills and experience. Don’t ever change for anyone else or hide who you are. You cannot control what other people say and do, but you can control how you respond to it and what YOU say and do. Responsibility means an ability to respond and you are responsible for your own happiness, don’t give away your personal power and let anyone else make you unhappy.

Always remember, no one can criticise you without your permission.

You have a choice. Like the Holy man, you can choose not to accept criticism, not to let it in or hurt you. Remember that the most critical people often have the most criticism for themselves. As Marisa says, the most important opinion you have of yourself is yours and the most important words you will ever hear are the words you say to yourself. Give yourself the praise you most need to hear, praise yourself for who you are and build up phenomenal self-esteem. Learn to love yourself. When you know that you cannot be rejected, you can be fearlessly bulletproof and free from bullying.

Depression can be completely debilitating. It doesn’t just affect individuals, it impacts families and can devastate lives. Even people who appear to ‘have it all’ suffer, often because of the pressure to be perfect. However, depression needn’t be a life sentence, not when there are fast and effective solutions available, which is why I want everyone to know about them.

Why do people get depressed?

As a celebrity therapist with over thirty years experience of freeing clients from all kinds of issues, including depression, I have often been asked why do people get depressed?

Here are my thoughts on 5 causes of depression:

1. Not feeling good enough

Not feeling worthy enough or believing we are good enough is the curse of the modern world. So many people feel pressured nowadays and are made to think that they are not pretty enough, smart enough, or rich enough. This feeling of not being enough affects everyone – even those who appear to ‘have it all.’

I’m often asked why celebrities get depressed when they appear to ‘have it all’?

When you don’t yet have it all, you have hope that one day your life will be great. When your life is great and you are still depressed, you feel even more worthless and alone feeling that way. Many people also feel like they don’t deserve success, we’ve all heard of

Imposter Syndrome’ and it can affect people in different ways. I also advise people not to try to be perfect, people who try to be or appear perfect are the most depressed, the most stressed and the most unhappy.

The pressure of expectations

Women who are known for their beauty often feel like they can never have a day off, which may make them want to do what Britney Spears did—cut off their hair, get fat and give up. Many beautiful women retire into seclusion: Liz Taylor, Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner, Anita Pallenberg all disappeared from the spotlight for a while, maybe to break away from the pressure of people’s expectations. Sportsmen feel pressure to be peak performers all the time. It’s interesting how many comedians are actually depressed – they put on an act of being happy and funny, then feel so much pressure to be funny all the time, which actually makes them unhappy. Robbie Williams famously became very depressed once he ‘had it all’ and sadly Robin Williams was a leading example to us all about just how much people may be struggling with depression, despite their presentation to the world.

Not feeling lovable enough

Commonly, depression comes down to not feeling loveable enough or good enough just as we are. People who feel unlovable are often drawn and driven to fame as they feel it will cure them. However fame can actually increase feelings of depression. The feelings of “I’m not loveable, but if I’m famous everyone will love me” morphs into “I am not lovable, everything I have is a fake – my fans only love my voice, body, lifestyle or who I am pretending to be.” Of course in the public eye everyone gets to see the destructive behaviour, so it’s all made worse. Not to mention the hurtful and harmful impact of ‘trolls’ and cyberbullies.

2. Not doing what you love or following your heart’s desire

Evidence has shown that when people don’t follow their inner yearnings or do what they love, this can create depression, sadness, apathy and illness. I have worked with so many clients who were depressed because they didn’t

take up the career they have a calling for or had a deep need to be involved in. So much depression is down to people not doing what they want to with their lives and suffering because of it.

In this article on 12 Tips To Heal Depression, I share that if you are depressed, because you have not followed your heart’s desire, it is never too late to do something about it.  Even if you can’t make it your career, you can still make it a hobby. Don’t live a life full of regrets about what you did not do, instead do something about it.

Doing what you love helps our bodies to heal as it activates our natural relaxation response, flooding our bodies with feel-good hormones and allowing our nervous system to relax and restore. Laughter is an important antidote to depression. Laughter releases endorphins and decreases stress hormones in the bloodstream, having a positive influence on our bodies.  Many studies have shown that if you consistently watch funny films, you make different chemicals to the ones you make when you feel depressed.

3. Feeling Out of Control

Depression can also be about not being able to control events. When something happens outside of our control, like a partner getting ill or when something traumatic happens, we feel like we can’t control anything and this can bring on depression.

We can’t control outside events like the weather, traffic or even our bodies, but we can control our thinking. Learning to think positively and to take control of our thoughts is very effective at transforming depression.

Change your behaviour as well as your beliefs and thoughts

In my book Ultimate Confidence, I talk about how changing your thinking changes your feelings. However with depression it is also essential that you also do some activities, because doing something that requires activity, no matter how small, can also change the depression.

The way you act and the actions you take will change the way you feel.

Feelings follow behaviour, therefore I tell my clients with depression that you must do what you don’t want to do to help change how you feel. Don’t wait for motivation or an improvement in mood before you take action, take action and you will become more motivated and get an improvement in mood.

4. Chemical imbalances and unhealthy lifestyles

Depression caused by chemical imbalances can feel outside of our control. However, the good news is that there are things you can do to put yourself back in control. We are in control of what we eat, think and do, therefore we are empowered to make choices that impact our day to day living and health.

Many studies show that our modern diet and lifestyle are making us ill. This article on How To Be Healthy looks at how we are what we eat, think and do. As Aristotle famously said ”Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

You are in control of what you put into your body and mind and you can take positive action to do what’s important to lead a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.

5. Disconnection from what matters most

We may technically be more connected than ever, but we are actually experiencing more disconnection to other people and a lack of human contact leads to unhappiness.

As humans, we are naturally social creatures. We need to feel a sense of belonging, that we are connected to others. This is deeply programmed into us for the survival of our species. As babies we need a connection to other people – to provide for us, to care for us, to feed and protect us – our lives depend on it.

Researchers have shown that loneliness and rejection activates the same parts of the brain as physical pain. Shockingly research has also shown that loneliness can be more dangerous to your health than smoking or obesity. With social pain being likened to physical pain, it’s no wonder we are all suffering so badly from this Disconnection Epidemic.

You might think that disconnection doesn’t affect you, but it does. It will affect your children, parents, friends, colleagues and the people that matter in your life. Disconnection is a major risk factor for suicide and even though we are all increasingly digitally connected, we are more disconnected from what truly matters. The world is being deeply affected by this issue of disconnection and I want everyone to know how to fix it, because there are so many people you can help, including yourself. No one needs to suffer when solutions are available.

So what can we do about it?

We collectively must acknowledge that this is causing great harm in our lives, relationships, and ability to connect and feel truly fulfilled.

There has never been a more necessary time to stand together for happier and healthier lives. The best way we can make that happen is by first recognising and healing this within ourselves, then helping others do the same. We can show others how to be happy, healthy and connected, by connecting ourselves.

I speak from personal experience:

I have been disconnected at times in my life, I was a single mother and really know what it’s like to have no one to turn to. However, when I discovered how to truly transform lives, my life took on a whole new meaning. When you find something that works so powerfully, you want to share it with the world so everyone can benefit, which is exactly what I’m doing now.

I am teaching others everything I know, so that they too can transform lives and free people from any pain and suffering. How to Free Yourself From Depression:

1. Tell yourself you are enough every day. Do it when you are in the shower, or cleaning your teeth. Our mind believes what we repeatedly tell it, so the more you tell yourself you are enough, the better you will feel. When you believe you are good enough and loveable, so will others. It’s not about what you look like or have, it’s about how you feel inside. Telling yourself every day “I am enough, I am lovable and will always be good enough” can and will change your life. All the clients I have got to do this – including some who were almost suicidal – tell me it changed their life forever. Read Sofia’s story here on overcoming suicidal depression. Give yourself the praise you most need to hear every day and share praise with others too. The more you love yourself, the more others will love you too.

2. Do what you love and follow your heart’s desire. If you always wanted to work with animals but being a vet is beyond you, become a dog walker. If you wanted to act and have left it too late, join a drama group. Do what you love, if that’s cooking, gardening, animals, children anything – fit it into your life. Remember, it’s the simple things that give us the most pleasure. Find ways to do what you love and love what you do. Most of all remember to love you.

3. Remember you are always in control – you can control your thoughts. You cannot control anything external to you, but you can control your response and what you choose to tell yourself about it. Remember – you always have a choice. This is a very empowering truth to remember. I delve deeper into this in my article How To Deal With Anxiety – The Secret to Phenomenal Coping Skills.

4. You are in control of what you put into your body and mind, which empowers you to be in the driving seat and make choices that will help you to be healthy. Take fish oils with omega 3 in them or eat avocado, olives, raw nuts and seeds or oily fish at least 3 times a week. Omega 3 makes your body burn fat too. Take all the B and D vitamins, if you are not eating the foods full of essential oils– the clue is in the word ESSENTIAL. Our body can’t make them and they are literally essential for our mental health. Read more about the foods I rate and the foods I hate. Exercise is also an important natural antidepressant, as it releases endorphins. Plus, make sure that you get some daylight every day, as it is needed for vitamin D and boosts serotonin, which is a natural antidepressant. Oxytocin, is also a natural antidepressant and happy hormone, released through touch, hugs, massage, orgasms and even stroking a pet.

​5. Connect to what matters most – other people. Depression can often take the fun out of life and leave people not wanting to go out and join social activities. However, this is where doing the things you don’t feel like doing can actually make you feel so much better longer term. Albert Einstein, often referred to as one of the most influential scientists of the 20th Century and a Nobel Prize winner for physics, was expelled from school and described by one of his teachers as “mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams.” He did not speak until he was four years old and couldn’t read until he was seven. A Blessing In Disguise?

You have all heard the phrase, maybe it’s a “blessing in disguise.” If you didn’t get the results you were hoping for, then maybe people have even said this to you recently? There’s a reason why this expression is so well used that it’s become clichéd and that’s because it is so often true. When things don’t turn out how we planned, it opens up new options for us to consider.

This isn’t just some positive mindset theory, I speak from personal experience and definitely believe that the toughest challenges often have the most to teach us. I also believe that disruptions to our planned path can give us new opportunities to explore.

A Personal Story…

I try not to have regrets in life, but maybe this is one! This is something I’ve never actually written about before, but I thought it was worth sharing for anyone who may be overcoming anxiety or going through something similar, as it highlights an important life lesson…

When I was doing my A levels I went to a friend’s house the night before my first exam for a revision study session – bad idea! She seemed to know so much more than me about stuff I couldn’t even remember learning. I felt stupid and unprepared and stayed up all night trying to cram more and more into my already overloaded mind. The result: I turned up to my exam completely exhausted and stressed out and inevitably did really badly. My mind went blank and I was taken over by nerves. I tried to answer the wrong part of the paper, on a syllabus we hadn’t even studied. Because I was in such a state afterwards, instead of telling the teacher and arranging a retake, I just went home completely deflated and cried. When it came to results day, instead of getting straight A’s I had a big fat C on the page for that particular subject.

This led to my university deferring my entry for a year as they had over subscribed my course. I remember sitting in my living room holding the piece of paper with my C level results on them, feeling completely lost, panicked and uncertain as to what to do. The future plans I had made, which involved going to Uni with one of my best friends, had disappeared just like that. I was offered other courses and other universities, feeling so much pressure to make a quick decision ‘to secure my future’. However, I had my heart set on a degree in Psychology and English Literature, which was a combination hardly any other University offered at the time. I decided to take a gap year and go to my preferred university to do my chosen course, just a year later.

“One Of The Best Experiences Of My Life…”

In my gap year, I got 6 months work-experience and travelled the world for 6 months, which turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. I gained so much worldly wisdom from that year, which I could never have learned from studying books or theory. It truly was a ‘blessing in disguise.’

It did also shape my future, as I loved travelling so much afterwards, that once I graduated I went and lived in China for a year teaching at a University. This later led to a career sabbatical volunteering across Asia, before co-founding a charity that helped hundreds of causes with millions of pounds. My chosen degree also led me into a career I loved as a communications specialist, and now as a writer, who to quote one reader of my first book, “provides a great psychological insight into human existence.”  Therefore, it really did “all come together” and “work out well in the end.” It’s a comforting truth that even when things seem like the end of the world at the time, this can actually lead you to a better place and open up new opportunities beyond any expectations of what you even knew was possible.

“Don’t Waste Time Worrying – It’s A Wasted Emotion”

A few years ago I was interviewed by my University and they asked me “what one piece of advice would you give your younger self?” My answer: “Don’t waste time worrying – it’s a wasted emotion. Trust that everything is ok and will turn out just as it is meant to.” This single piece of advice, not to worry so much, would have stopped me stressing out about things I couldn’t control and instead focus on enjoying every moment of my experience. It have helped me in overcoming anxiety.

What Would You Tell Your Younger Self?
